Appeared as Orestes

Created by the renowned German stage director Peter Stein, his first experience working with Russian actors.

"The Oresteia in Moscow is a great and spellbinding spectacle. ... [Stein] has created word-music of immense beauty and power. Arias, duets, fugues, choruses blend into a striking vocal orchestra. He trusts the word with that which must not be lost in the flow of action. He dares – and succeeds – with a stage interpretation that follows no rule of fashion, and affirms the theater as a place where the leading role belongs to the word. ... The production introduces the Russians to a great – perhaps the greatest – theatrical text." – Bernd Zucher, Sueddeutsch Zeitung № 24

The Russian critics didn't take to the production at first. At seven hours' running time, it was a theatrical marathon to which the modern audiences are not accustomed. However, the production was popular in Europe and extensively toured both in Russia and internationally. Yevgeny Mironov's performance had inspired Stein to eventually stage a Russian Hamlet with Yevgeny in the title role.
