In his play Dom Juan ou le Festin de pierre, Moliere had turned to a popular theme that had its origins in Spain – the adventures of a libertine who stopped at nothing in his quest for sensual pleasure. In writing the play, Moliere followed not only the classical Spanish plot but the structure of a Spanish comedy, with its alternating tragic and comic scenes, abandonment of the unity of time and place, and linguistic variances. The forbidden play did not see print in Moliere's lifetime. Its first performance took place in Paris at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal on February 15, 1665, with Moliere appearing as Dom Juan's servant Sganarelle.

Aleksandr Marin's adaptation also made use of excerpts from the Scriptures and from the works of the Marquis De Sade and Pierre Charles Fournier de Saint-Amant.
