Miss Julie, a 1888 play by Swedish author August Strindberg, is one of modern theater's great classics. The fateful tale of a willful young aristocrat's seduction of a servant during a Midsummer's Eve celebration is widely regarded as the most important dramatic piece to come out of the literary movement known as naturalism. Inspired by the new ideas of psychology that swept Europe in the late 19th century, Strindberg's portrayal of the strength of sexual desire – and the often calamitous results of surrendering to that desire – strongly influenced later playwrights, most notably Tennessee Williams.

For this Theater of Nations production by Germany's Thomas Ostermeier, one of the most distinguished directors and theater managers working today, the play has been adapted by Mikhail Durnenkov to take place in present-day Russia. It stars Yevgeny Mironov, Chulpan Khamatova and Iuliya Peresild.
