The State Theater of Nations' new production of the celebrated play by the French author, playwright and philosopher premiered on January 31 and February 1, 2011.

Camus, then a young amateur actor in Algiers, wrote the play shortly before WWII intending to appear in the title role – the Roman emperor depicted in Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus' De vita Caesarum as the most self-indulgent and violent of the Roman rulers. The play, where, in the words of Jean-Paul Sartre, "freedom turns into pain, while pain liberates", went on to become the unofficial artistic manifesto of French existentialist literature and a staple in theaters the world over.

The new staging is the creation of the renowned Lithuanian director Eimuntas Nekrošius, who first worked with Yevgeny Mironov in The Stanislavsky Foundation's legendary production of The Cherry Orchard.
