In this sequel to the Oscar-winning film, the heroes go through the hell of WWII to find each other and a new chance for happiness. Sergei Kotov, the general betrayed by Stalin and arrested at the end of the first picture, escapes from the GULAG, which is bombed in the beginning of the war, and finds himself as a private at the front, where his now-grown daughter is serving as a nurse. Once again his and Mitya's paths cross, and the latter has little chance of surviving the meeting.

The Burnt by the Sun 2 project consists of two separate films. BTS2. Exodus (sometimes translated as "Imminence", "Prestanding" or "Anticipation") was released in spring of 2010, and BTS2. Citadel in 2011. A TV miniseries is also in the making. Yevgeny Mironov reprises his original award-winning role.

Yevgeny Mironov's recognition for the film:
  • The White Elephant National Film Critics' Award for Best Supporting Actor
  • Best Supporting Actor Award, Nika National Film Awards
